Cambodia has been ranked the best country for eco-tourism in Southeast Asia, followed by Laos, Thailand and Malaysia, according to U.S. News & World Report, as cited by the Ministry of Tourism.

In the global ranking, Cambodia placed 17th, while Seychelles topped the list, followed by Slovenia and Croatia.

“Cambodia is the smallest country by landmass on the Indochina Peninsula. Officially named the Kingdom of Cambodia, and affectionately called the Kingdom of Wonder, the country has a rich cultural history, with roots in both Buddhism and Hinduism, and is home to the largest religious monument on earth: Angkor Wat, a temple complex built in the 12th century spanning approximately 400 acres,” U.S. News & World Report commented.

According to the same source, the best eco-tourism destinations are those that combine natural beauty with active environmental protection and rich cultural heritage.

The ranking incorporates data on deforestation, linguistic diversity, natural attractions, protected areas, species richness, sustainable trade and World Heritage Sites.
